Frequently asked questions

How does it work?

  1. Download the SoundID Tools mobile app.

  2. Create your Dolby Headphone Personalization profile

  3. Apply the profile to Dolby Atmos rendering.

Which Dolby Atmos rendering tools are supported?

Dolby Headphone Personalization is supported with Dolby Atmos rendering in two forms:

  1. Dolby Atmos Renderer standalone app (v5.3.2 or higher required). Available for purchase in Dolby Professional Store, and a free trial is also available.

  2. Dolby Atmos rendering in supported DAWs. Most major DAWs already have the Dolby Atmos rendering natively integrated (Renderer standalone app not needed).

  • Step-by-step instructions here.

Note: Dolby Headphone Personalization profile import has already rolled out for DAWs with native Dolby Atmos rendering. However, the feature updates are pending from the individual DAW manufacturers themselves.

At the time of the SoundID Tools app release, only DaVinci Resolve has the feature available. Feature updates in other supported DAWs will follow shortly.

What are the requirements for the SoundID Tools mobile app?

  • iOS 16 or above, with TrueDepth frontal camera (iPhone XS, XR or later).

  • Android 10 or above.

What are the benefits of Dolby Headphone Personalization?

Dolby Headphone Personalization improves the spatial and timbral accuracy of Dolby Atmos headphone mixes, allowing a more accurate and consistent monitoring experience:

  • Improves how well you can perceive direction and elevation (front/back, up/down) when listening to Atmos binaurally.

  • Improves the sense that sound sources exist in a space around you.

  • Helps you make decisions with more confidence because the binaural render is better matched to your anatomy.

Can I use it with SoundID Reference headphone calibration?

Yes, Dolby Headphone Personalization can be used in combination with SoundID Reference headphone calibration (SoundID Reference standalone app or DAW plugin). The routing depends on which Dolby Atmos rendering workflow you are using, learn more here.

Is it approved by Dolby?

Yes, Dolby and Sonarworks are working together to ensure that the SoundID Tools app conforms to Dolby’s standards and is compatible with the full ecosystem of Dolby Atmos content creation tools.
