Term: Stereo

« Back to Glossary Index

Stereo sound requires two audio channels and two speakers, one for the right channel information and one for the left channel information. When two speakers are set up in an equilateral triangle with the listener at one corner and each speaker in another corner, the sound should seem to spread evenly from left to right. Any sound panned to the center of the stereo image should seem to float between the speakers in a “phantom center” speaker. Stereo recordings can be created using pan pots on a mixer or by using stereo microphone techniques.
