Term: Metadata

Data that describes other data, typically data included in a file to describe that particular file. Audio files use ID3 metadata, which includes information about a file’s author, genre, images, lyrics, tempo, and other information. Audio metadata is read and written by DAWs and music players. Sound designers may use metadata to assign descriptions or tags to audio files to enhance searchability.
