Term: DSD

« Back to Glossary Index

Direct Stream Digital is a lossless high-resolution digital audio encoding method that stores digital audio as a single bit at sample rates ranging from 2.8 MHz up to 22.57 MHz. DSD can easily be converted to PCM audio, so many A-D converters and audio interfaces first convert analog audio into DSD and then downsample to the desired PCM format used by a DAW. Some consumer music is sold as DSD audio files that can be played back with compatible software and hardware.
