Term: Compression (Data)

« Back to Glossary Index

The process of reducing the storage size or the number of bits required to represent information allows for more efficient transmission or storage. Data compression can be ‘lossy’ or ‘lossless.’ MP3 and AAC files are compressed ‘lossy’ files. Data compression is destructive and some of the original data is lost and can not be retrieved, thereby reducing the perceived quality of the file.
