Term: Binaural

« Back to Glossary Index

Binaural recording employs two microphones separated by a baffle that mimics the size and shape of a human head. Binaural recordings, when listened to over headphones, provide a lifelike 3-D experience. Immersive audio formats, like Dolby Atmos, can generate a binaural representation of spatial audio for headphone listening that somewhat simulates a speaker-based surround sound experience.
