Term: Ambisonic

« Back to Glossary Index

Often used in virtual reality audio, it is a full-sphere surround sound format with height information both above and below the listener. Ambisonic recordings are often made with a soundfield microphone with four capsules arranged in a tetrahedral array. The signals from the four capsules make up the A-Format and these signals can be manipulated after recording to create the B-Format, made up of steerable or beamforming arrays with any polar pattern.
