What makes PortraitXO\u2019s work so unique is that from a young age she has experienced sound-to-taste synesthesia, a condition which has the artist \u201ctasting\u201d different frequencies of sound. This has given her a singular approach to music and a fascination with creating multi-sensory experiences that can give others a doorway into her creative world, something she has manifested in conventional songwriting as well as interactive installations and live performances. Her continuing efforts in refining this process have found her embracing Sonarworks\u2019 Reference 4 audio calibration plugin, ensuring that her musical projects not only translate on a sonic level across all of these mediums, but on a taste level as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Sampling\nthe frequency spectrum<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Although only 4% of the population* is reported to experience synesthesia, artists with the condition are not entirely uncommon. Hans Zimmer, Mary J. Blige, and Kristin Hersh are just a few of those that experience it in the more well-known sound-to-color affiliation where certain sounds are also experienced as color hues. For PortraitXO, who has experienced the condition for her entire life, the correlation between sound and taste gave her an appreciation for variety in both from an early age. \u201cIt\u2019s always been this intangible experience and I never really questioned it,\u201d she said. \u201cThe best way I can explain is that both sound and flavor are two types of senses that are among the hardest to describe, so once I realized how I was experiencing things this way was different from others, I sought to find ways to express that in my work.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe highest frequencies are very citric, and\nthey trigger the most dynamic reactions,\u201d she continues. \u201cFrom there it gets\nsugary until the middle highs, where it tastes like chili. The very middle are\nbland flavors like rice and potatoes, while the lows are like unsweetened\npeanut butter. What this ultimately gave me was an appreciation for all flavors\nand therefore sounds, which made we want to explore music that would encompass\nall of these tastes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Portrait XO is currently a\nResident Artist at Factory Berlin, a think tank of artists, tech innovators,\nand scientists from across the globe that explore boundary-pushing ideas in\narts and science, and part of a 2-week residency for Night Embassy by\nJagermeister (CO:QUO x Digi-Gxl) from September 6-17. Portrait XO has used this\nopportunity to explore and educate others on her condition, creating immersive\nworks that allow her audience to experience sound as she does. Taste components\nin these have ranged from matching flavored sweets to sound clips in\ninteractive installations, to live experiences like her \u2018Sound Tasting\u2019\nperformance in January 2019 where audience members drank specific wines and\nbeers to accompany the pieces that she performed on stage. &nbsp;\u201cI loved the\nidea of showcasing work in a different way, that would create a unique\nexperience,\u201d she says, \u201cIt allowed me to still use music as my primary language\nbut allow it take on a different role in how someone would experience\nit.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Mixing\nto taste<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>PortraitXO varies her production setup\ndepending on the end situation, favoring Ableton Live for her sound\ninstallations and Logic for her more songwriter-focused recording projects.\n\u201cThey each make me write and produce differently,\u201d she explains. \u201cLogic puts me\nin a more traditional producing mind frame and I\u2019ll often use it when I want to\nfocus on crafting the structure of a composition.&nbsp; When I want to get more experimental and do\nmore sound designing for an installation, I definitely favor Ableton.\u201d She uses\nan Apollo Twin interface and a variety of MIDI controllers, including the ROLI\nSeaboard, MAudio Keystation, and the Akai APC40 to compose a wide range of\nmusic influenced by both her singer\/songwriter background and her classical\npiano training. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key part of her recording setup for the\nlast few years has been Sonarworks\u2019 Reference 4, which has allowed her to\nensure that her compositions and songs translate across the variety of mediums\nthat they are heard in, as well as ensuring that she\u2019s mixing them to their\noptimum potential. \u201cOnce I started using Reference 4, I noticed a difference\nright away because my bedroom studio wasn\u2019t treated at all,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was\nfascinating to see all the trouble spots that Reference 4 pointed out, and\nhaving it systematically adjust my monitors was immediately helpful.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"565\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-uploads.imgix.net\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-05-at-9.53.43-PM-1000x565.png?auto=compress%2Cformat\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3791\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-uploads.imgix.net\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-05-at-9.53.43-PM-1000x565.png?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;w=1000 1000w, https:\/\/blog-uploads.imgix.net\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-05-at-9.53.43-PM-400x226.png?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;w=400 400w, https:\/\/blog-uploads.imgix.net\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-05-at-9.53.43-PM-768x434.png?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;w=768 768w, https:\/\/blog-uploads.imgix.net\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-05-at-9.53.43-PM.png?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;w=1275 1275w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption>Photo Credit: Beat Lab Academy <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>She also uses Reference 4 when working in headphones, something she has\nto do more often since relocated from Los Angeles to Berlin, favoring a\nlovingly worn pair of Sony MDR 7506s that she used for over a decade. \u201cI\u2019ve had\nto bounce between a few different studios, and I\u2019ve found myself missing the\ncalibration when it\u2019s not present, it\u2019s something that creates an overall\nfrequency flatness that makes the mixing side of things much easier.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She notes that although an optimum mix may\nnot correlate to a specific taste &#8212; each piece having its own unique identity\nin that regard &#8212; she did occasionally find herself influenced <em>by<\/em> taste, albeit inadvertently. \u201cI used\nto drink lemon water in the morning while I was working on my mixes, and I kept\nfinding that the mixes would sound muddy when listening back. I didn\u2019t make the\nconnection until later that the lemon juice was making me more sensitive to\nhigher frequencies,\u201d she says with a laugh.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><strong>Cutting\nedge experimentation<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Portrait XO is set to\nrelease her debut AI album later this year and single launching soon, another\nexperiment that has her challenging listeners perceptions \u2013 duetting with\nAI-generated audio developed from her own voice in collaboration with CJ from\nDadabots.&nbsp;Where her previous pieces have been carefully composed, this\nexperiment has her developing musical ideas alongside cutting-edge AI\ntechnology, using the computer-generated randomness to spark off new\ncompositional ideas.
